Funding and Governance

GENeS is currently funded through the Genetic Literacy Project (GLP).

GLP is a non-profit organization that aims to foster evidence based debate about genetics and biotechnology issues by curating news on current issues and publishing original analysis. GLP is funded by charitable trusts and foundations, namely the John Templeton Foundation, the Searle Freedom Trust and the Winkler Family Foundation, as well as by individual donations.

GENeS is affiliated with the UC Davis Institute for Food and Agricultural Literacy (IFAL), an outreach initiative on food and agricultural issues under the umbrella of the UC Davis World Food Center. During its first year of operation, GENeS also received University of California funding via IFAL.

As GENeS becomes established it will develop its own funding sources and will appoint advisors from the science, policy and media communities to provide expertise and guidance on issues as they arise.

GENeS aims to become a 501(c)(3) organization with an independent board of trustees.
